🌟 Notes from the Office

After a well-deserved summer break, it’s time to dive into an exciting autumn season filled with opportunities, events, and innovation. Whether you’re a student, researcher, or industry professional, there’s something for you in the months ahead.

Students can once again apply for free participation in our annual conference – a unique chance to gain insights, expand networks, and visit our job fair at the same time.

We’re also hosting the Photonics & Electronics for Defence workshop, where Swedish photonics companies can explore how to prepare for the EU defence industry with a focus on:

  • night vision and imaging,

  • secure communication systems,

  • and laser technology.

And don’t miss Optics & Photonics in Sweden 2025 – our annual flagship conference. This year’s program highlights some of the most exciting developments in the field, including:

  • Terahertz,

  • Photonics and Artificial Intelligence,

  • and Photonics Applications.

It’s shaping up to be an inspiring season – and we look forward to seeing you at our events!

✨ News from our partners

The UK Photonics Leadership Group has released the latest Photonics Industry Report,

Revenue growth in 2022–2024 was twice the rate of 2020–2022, while profit growth rose by 25% over the past year. More than 40% of companies invest over 10% of their turnover in R&D, and the sector employs more people than the automotive, aerospace or pharmaceutical sectors.

Growing demand, technological innovation, and region-wide strengths put the UK photonics industry on track to reach £21.6 billion by 2026 and potentially £50 billion by 2035.

✨ News from EU

Help secure photonics’ place in the EU Chips Act

The EU Chips Act is under review to ensure it remains fit for purpose amid changing market, technological and geopolitical realities. The European Commission is running an online consultation to gather stakeholders’ views on the current Chips Act and possible improvements.

It has also launched a call for evidence outlining the issues to be addressed, objectives, reasons for EU action, policy options and the consultation strategy.

We invite you to share your views by completing the survey and contributing to the call for evidence by 28 November 2025.

Your input will help shape “EU Chips Act 2.0” and ensure the photonics community’s interests are represented.

Major step for flat and adjustable optics

By carefully placing nanostructures on a flat surface, researchers at Linköping University have significantly improved the performance of so-called optical metasurfaces in conductive plastics. This is a major step for controllable flat optics, with future applications such as video holograms, invisibility materials, and sensors, as well as in biomedical imaging.

Senseair Launches S88 GH - CO Sensor Purpose-Built for Greenhouses

Senseair has launched the S88 GH, a CO₂ sensor tailored for greenhouse and indoor farming. Built on the S88 platform, it excels in high humidity, elevated CO₂ levels, and fluctuating temperatures.

It offers a 0–20,000 ppm range, ±50 ppm ±5 % accuracy, and fast 1-second readings. Like all of our sensors it is based on our tried-and-true NDIR technology. With anti-condensation design, and support for UART (Modbus), PWM, and alarms, it integrates easily into control systems.

Laser 2000 – Connecting Photonics in the Nordics

This year, Laser 2000 proudly established Laser 2000 AB in Stockholm – a wholly owned subsidiary of Laser 2000 GmbH. This strategic expansion reinforces our commitment to delivering even stronger local support for customers and suppliers across Europe. Our goal is to provide tailored solutions and faster response times in key markets.
